Salt Spring Island

Salt Spring Island Weekend Getaway
July 5-7, 2013

Last weekend Mike and I went to Salt Spring Island for  relaxing weekend of camping, hiking and exploring. I'd never been to Salt Spring before, so I thought it might be fun to go check out something new. We left on Friday afternoon and after a 1.5 hour ferry ride we arrived in Longs Harbour. We drove through the town of Ganges and settled into our campsite about 5min out of town at Mowhinna Creek Campground. We spent the first evening exploring the town and enjoying a Friday evening beer on on a deck in the Ganges Marina.

On Saturday we headed down to check out the famous Salt Spring Island Farmer's Market.  There we a lot of beautiful art pieces, great baking and tasty looking fresh fruits and vegetables and random other food and artisan craft items. We came away with a hand made toy for our cats, made with recycled fur and fresh catnip; They loved it.

After the market we went for a drive to explore the island.  We drove the entire length of the island, stopped at the Salt Spring Brewery for a beer tasting, visited the lavender fields and hiked the shorelines of Ruckle Provincial Park. We ended our evening with a trip into town to enjoy an ice cream cone and a walk in the oceanside city park.

On Sunday we visited the Tree House Cafe in Ganges and had a wonderfully fresh breakfast on their outdoor deck before catching a morning ferry back to the mainland.
